There is something special about the smell of pumpkin bread baking in the oven on a cool autumn day. The warm aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin spice fills the kitchen and makes any home feel a little cozier. Whether you're enjoying a slice with your morning coffee, serving it as an afternoon treat, or sharing a loaf with friends and family, homemade pumpkin bread is a delicious way to celebrate fall. In my family we often serve it warm with a little butter or even honey butter. It has become a staple of our fall family celebrations.

This easy pumpkin bread recipe is soft, moist, and full of warm spices. It uses canned pumpkin puree and simple pantry staples, making it a wonderful recipe to keep on hand throughout the autumn season. Best of all, you don't need a mixer or any special baking skills to make it!

Why You'll Love This Pumpkin Bread

  • Easy to make: Just mix the ingredients, pour the batter into a loaf pan, and bake.

  • Moist and tender: Pumpkin puree gives the bread its wonderful texture.

  • Full of fall flavor: Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger complement the pumpkin perfectly.

  • Perfect for sharing: Make a loaf for breakfast, an afternoon snack, or a homemade gift.

  • Easy to customize: Add chocolate chips, chopped pecans, or walnuts for extra flavor and texture.

Easy Pumpkin Bread Recipe

Prep time: 15 minutes Bake time: 55–65 minutes Total time: About 1 hour 20 minutes Yield: 2 loaves, approximately 10 slices each

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ¾ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves or pumpkin pie spice

  • 1 can pumpkin puree

  • 2 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • ½ cup packed brown sugar

  • ¾ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the oven and pan.

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease loaf pan with butter or cooking spray. For easier removal, line the pan with parchment paper, leaving a little overhang on the sides.

Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves or pumpkin pie spice. Set aside.

Step 3: Combine the wet ingredients.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 4: Make the batter.

Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture. Stir gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the bread dense. If desired, fold in the pecans, or walnuts.

Step 5: Fill the loaf pan.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle coarse sugar over the top if you'd like a slightly crunchy, sweet crust.

Step 6: Bake the bread.

Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. If the top begins browning too quickly, loosely cover it with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes.

Step 7: Cool and serve.

Let the pumpkin bread cool in the pan for about 10–15 minutes. Carefully remove it and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Enjoy a slice plain, spread with butter, or topped with cream cheese for an extra-special treat!

Tips for the Best Pumpkin Bread

Use pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin puree contains only pumpkin, while pie filling already contains sweeteners and spices that can change the recipe.

Measure the flour carefully. Too much flour can make the loaf dry. Spoon flour into your measuring cup and level it off rather than scooping directly from the bag.

Don't overmix the batter. Stir only until the flour disappears. A few small lumps are perfectly fine.

Check for doneness. Pumpkin bread is dense and moist, so the top may look done before the center has finished baking. Test the very center with a toothpick.

Let it cool before slicing. The bread continues to set as it cools, making it easier to slice without crumbling.

Delicious Pumpkin Bread Variations

One of the best things about homemade pumpkin bread is how easy it is to customize.

  • Chocolate chip pumpkin bread: Fold in ½ cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips for a sweet, dessert-like loaf.

  • Cinnamon sugar pumpkin bread: Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the batter before baking for a sweet, lightly crisp topping.

  • Pumpkin cream cheese bread: Swirl a sweetened cream cheese mixture through the batter before baking for a rich, cheesecake-inspired variation.

How to Store Pumpkin Bread

Allow the loaf to cool completely before storing it.

  • Room temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  • Refrigerator: Keep tightly wrapped for up to 1 week, although refrigeration may make the bread slightly firmer.

  • Freezer: Wrap the whole loaf or individual slices tightly and freeze for up to 3 months for best quality.

To enjoy frozen slices, let them thaw at room temperature or warm them briefly in the microwave.

Happy baking!
